Major global cities — with London as a prime example — are facing levels of deep poverty and destitution not seen in many years. This surge is being driven by the cumulative impact of the cost-of-living crisis, soaring housing costs, and prolonged wage stagnation.
This coverage by Radio France International, the French public radio and television service, highlights the situation, focusing on the critical work Refuge Network International (RNI) is doing in the heart of London to support some vulnerable groups.
The statistics are a sobering reminder of why our mission is more urgent than ever:
1 in 50 Londoners is currently facing homelessness or extreme precariousness.
6.8 million people across the UK are now impacted by deep poverty—a level not seen in three decades, according to a report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
Franceinfo followed one of our volunteer teams during a recent street outreach, capturing the reality of the cost-of-living crisis and the lifeline RNI provides through our food security initiatives.
Huge thanks to Gaële Joly and the team for their diligent reporting and for helping us amplify the voices of the underserved.
