In a shocking case of Modern-Day Slavery,a 22-year-old woman, simply known as Zunduri, has managed to escape from a location in Mexico where she was enslaved for over 2 years by a family and forced to slave in their laundry business, working 12 hours daily and eating only one meal per day.
Chained by the neck like an animal inside the laundrette, she got so hungry that she would eat polyethene bags used in covering the clothes she was ironing, and would drink water in the pressing iron to reduce her thirst.
Zunduri finally managed to escape when her cruel captors failed to chain her up properly and she fled the dry cleaners.
Narrating her heart-breaking ordeal, Zunduri (a Japanese name she adopted, meaning ‘beautiful girl’) disclosed she was frequently beaten and burnt with hot iron.As a result of the constant torture, her body is covered with serious scars from months of unrelenting brutal attacks.Doctors treating her at a medical facility in Mexico city where she was rushed to, likened her body to that of an aged woman due to the damage caused.
She said:” I was tortured. There is no part on my body without scars.
“I want them to pay for every tear, every pain, every blow for everything I have had to suffer.
“My life plan is to live. I want to be pastry chef, I want to live, I want to recover all the years I have lost.
The slave masters, all members of one family have been arrested by the police. They are Jose de Jesus Sanchez Vera, Leticia Molina Ochoa , her sister Fani Molina Ochoa, and Ivette and her sister Jannet Hernandez Molina. They could spend the next 40 years in jail if convicted.
Mexico is one of the most notorious countries for slavery in the world. The Global Slavery Index indicates that there are 266,900 people working as if they were owned by a master in the country. This is a greater number than those in forced slave labour estimated in the whole of Afghanistan, North Korea and Serbia combined.
